Did you know a Portuguese Water Dog once lived at the White House? In 2009, the Obama family chose a dog of the breed, named Bo, as the residence's dog. Bo quickly became one of the most photographed dogs in the world, and his popularity helped introduce the breed — and its Portuguese origins — to millions of people.
In 2013, Bo was joined by Sunny, another Portuguese Water Dog who also began accompanying the presidential family at various official events.
It's a good excuse to remember that, long before White House fame, this is a Portuguese working breed, shaped by the sea and by the fishermen of our coast. You can read the breed's full history on our Breed History page.
